Introduction

This manual was created as a sole source of managerial support and is intended to provide guidance and direction to managers and to effectively prepare them for the successful execution of the following phases (1) of the major downsizing exercise presently facing Hatley Environmental Ltd.

Phase 1 - Preparing staff for lay-offs

Phase 2 - Giving employees lay-off notice

Phase 3 - Supporting remaining staff

Phase 4 - Rebuilding the organization

It is important to realize that due to unforeseen resource and time constraints this manual will be the only resource guide that will be provided directly by Hatley Ltd. to assist managers with this endeavour. Therefore it is imperative that management quickly absorb and incorporate the strategies laid out in the following sections in order to cope with the impending lay-off scenario and successfully execute the associated processes.

Having said that, don't panic. Downsizing can be effectively managed with positive outcomes if these straightforward and common sense lay-off strategies and processes are properly executed and implemented. In fact, through strong leadership, decision-making and ethical approaches to management, the organization can not only be rebuilt, but also improved. The key is to recognize the immediate and ongoing importance of addressing and maintaining the organizational health of the remaining staff; as the future and productivity of the Hatley depends directly upon a collective foundation of emotionally healthy staff members.
